Code of the Lines

Operator, you've mastered the alphabet. Now SYLBiT needs you to map where those letters live on the Treble Clef staff using quick acronyms.

The Treble Clef (G Clef)

The symbol you see at the start of the staff is the Treble Clef. It's also known as the G Clef because it circles around the line where the note G lives.

*The swirl of the clef wraps around the G line (highlighted).*

The 5 Lines (E-G-B-D-F)

The Treble Clef staff has exactly 5 lines. Counting from the bottom up, the notes are:

Line Notes (Bottom to Top)
EGB DF
Treble Clef Line Notes: E, G, B, D, F 𝄞 E G B D F

The 4 Spaces (F-A-C-E)

Between those lines are 4 spaces. These are the easiest to remember because they spell a word.

Space Notes (Bottom to Top)
F A C E
Treble Clef Space Notes: F, A, C, E 𝄞 F A C E

If it's in a space, just look at the FACE!

Memorization Hacks

To remember the lines, we use a funny sentence. Pick your favorite:

  • Every Good Boy Does Fine (Classic)
  • Evis Guitar Broke Down Friday
  • Elephants Go Bouncing Down Freeways

The Bass Clef (F Clef)

For lower notes (like the left hand on a piano), we use the Bass Clef. It looks like an ear with two dots. It's called the F Clef because those two dots surround the F line.

Bass Lines (G-B-D-F-A)

The lines on the Bass Clef are different. From bottom to top:

Line Notes (Bottom to Top)
GBD FA
Mnemonic: Good Boys Do Fine Always
Bass Clef Line Notes: G, B, D, F, A 𝄢 G B D F A

Bass Spaces (A-C-E-G)

The spaces spell something easy to remember too:

Space Notes (Bottom to Top)
A C E G
Mnemonic: All Cows Eat Grass
Bass Clef Space Notes: A, C, E, G 𝄢 A C E G
