What is a Scale?

Think of scales as the alphabet of music. Once you understand them, you have the building blocks to create your own musical sentences.

Most of the music you hear—from nursery rhymes to pop hits—is built using the notes from a Major Scale.

The Core Ingredients

To build a scale, you need two things: a place to start, and a map of where to go.

• The Root Note: Your starting point (Home Base). If we start on C, it's the C Major Scale.
• Intervals: The measured distance between each note.

The Magic Formula

Here is the secret recipe. To build a Major Scale, start on ANY note and follow this exact pattern of Whole Steps (W) and Half Steps (H):

Construction: C Major

Let's apply the formula starting on C.
